A Ray of Light

A Ray of Light

Recently UK was in the news for all the wrong reasons. The mindless violence that swept over many parts of the country was quite shocking. Most people were quite clueless about why people were indulging in such mindless acts of arson and looting. It seemed a free for all as a shocked nation and the rest of the world watched.

Along with all the news reports that came in, I chanced upon one that did not seem to fit in with the general coverage of this inglorious event. After checking the internet for the price of Garmin 610, which my son wants for his eighteenth birthday, I decided to update myself on the happenings in the UK and came across this shocker! I say shocker as it was pleasantly so.

The parents of a teenage boy turned him over to the police for having been one of the looters at a popular store. He had pocketed a packet of chewing gum worth one pound! What is remarkable is the attitude and discipline that was displayed; the principle of the matter, that theft must be punished. I am not sure what punishment the judge meted out for this, but I am sure many people, the world over, would have appreciated the parents for their courage and conviction taking precedence over love. It is such acts that are comforting in a world going topsy-turvy. And assure us that there still are people around who are ethical, decent and law abiding. If more people were as conscious, lesser would be the ills that plague us. Fact is, a lot of wrong doing is swept under the carpet or glossed over when, in fact, action to correct it needs to be taken.

Take it from me, that boy will never do anything illegal again!

Israel and Palestine

Israel and Palestine

In the Bible when a man named Nathanael was told that Jesus, the Son of God, is from Nazareth, he asked can anything good come out of Nazareth. Today, when the world is in a turmoil, with sights of a third world war even closer, it would be a good question to ask, can anything good come out of the Middle East politics. It’s funny that most of the things that happen in the Middle East end up in violence and bloodshed, and even funnier is the fact that the conflict of Israel and Palestine is more than a couple thousand years old.

Nearly every president in the White House was elected after they had formally declared their support for Israel. Every American president has tried to bring peace in this conflict and guess what the percentage of failure is: it’s 100%. They have all failed.

However, there is something good that has been happening recently, something that can only be understood if you are following Middle East politics religiously. As of now we have a situation of violence between Hamas and Israel, but somehow this is the second time in a row that both are trying to resolve to an unofficial truce. And it gets even better with Egypt mediating and helping both the sides to hold their peace. If you are a banker, then you will be praying that there would be no war, especially if you have given out unsecured business loans, or if you are in real estate or any other business except for arms trade. Hope this truce would continue, the fact that both sides are willing to stop violence is a healthy indication and hopefully it’s leading to a future with no violence whatsoever and not to forget better scope for business.

The Green Kid

The Green Kid

Most of the people consider the modern day youth to be some of the most glorious disappointments in history – old people say they are reckless, religious people say they lack any such spiritual orientation, lack of moral values is often ascribed to them. Yet, there is hope in the thinking of the young people and the very example for this comes from the US, Northport region where a local kid managed to develop the most efficient solar energy production technique possible on Earth. Being only 13 years old, Aidan Dwyer managed to combine natural science, mathematics, physics and chemistry to astonish the science communities and to show us some brightness in the modern day youth. He will surely amaze even the Diesel Huddersfield suppliers with his green thinking.

The bot managed to develop the most efficient solar energy production technique by closely exploring the positioning of leaves on tree branches. For weeks he has been researching possible combinations that allow maximum usage of solar light. Combining his practical knowledge with the mathematical principles of the Fibonacci numbers (used to generate natural patterns), the boy positioned small solar panels on a specially designed plastic frame that allows adjustment to wind and light at the same time. Thus his invention managed to produce up to 50% more electricity from an equal-productivity solar panels positioned on the ground and exposed to the sun.

The reason for this is the construction – as we all know solar radiation in the form of light comes strictly from the source but it also changes faster than the solar panels can adjust to, especially during the winter. Thus the boy managed to put the first energy pattern based entirely on natural physics in use.

The Light At The End Of The Tunnel

The UK riots last week produced a lot of anger, indignation and fear. Yet they also produced some of the best acts of human kindness seen in a while. As mindless looters ravaged cities across Britain, some people instead of meeting violence with violence did the opposite. Tariq Jahan lost his son during the Birmingham riots. Instead of urging police to catch the killers and bring them to justice he appealed for peace on the streets.

JK comes under attack!

I have to admit it: I’m not huge on Harry Potter. I know, shock-horror, how terrible a person am I, exactly? Yes, I know it’s supposed to be the best thing ever, but I just don’t get it. And it’s nothing against JK Rowling, honest (really, how could I have anything against her? I’ve seen interviews with her and she is always sweet in them); I’m sure she’s a lovely lady with great morals and a lovely personality. The truth is, I just don’t get books about wizards…

this troubles me. What kind of world do we live in when anyone can stand up and suggest that plagiarism has happened?
